7.7 Indonesia Quake, Colombia, Venezuela, Etna: Why Does 2026 Feel Like the Earth Is Breaking—and Why HAARP Is Trending Again?

A magnitude-7.7 earthquake off Indonesia has landed in a year already scarred by catastrophic quakes in Colombia and Venezuela and a major Etna eruption. X is exploding with HAARP, ionosphere, balloon and 'earthquake weapon' theories. The pattern feels extraordinary—but feeling a pattern and proving a cause are very different things.

A magnitude-7.7 earthquake off Indonesia has given the internet exactly the kind of sequence from which conspiracy theories are born.

Indonesia. Colombia. Venezuela. Mexico earlier this summer. Now Mount Etna is erupting so persistently that volcanic ash has repeatedly shut Catania Airport in Sicily.

Scroll X for five minutes and the question appears everywhere in different forms: what is happening to the planet?

Then comes the second question: is all of this really natural?

Indonesia’s latest earthquake is real. The U.S. Geological Survey and Indonesian authorities measured a magnitude-7.7 event north of Flores on August 14, 2026. Buildings collapsed, people were killed and a tsunami warning was issued before being lifted.

Colombia’s disaster is also real. Its magnitude-7.4 earthquake this week became the country’s strongest in more than a century and has killed hundreds. Venezuela suffered devastating twin earthquakes in June, including a magnitude-7.5 event.

Etna is currently experiencing an unusually persistent eruptive phase that has severely disrupted flights in Sicily.

Put those headlines together and 2026 looks apocalyptic.

But there is a first correction that matters: Etna is a volcano, not another “mega earthquake.” Volcanism and earthquakes both originate in an active Earth, and volcanoes generate local seismicity, but one eruption in Sicily does not mean the same mechanism is causing tectonic earthquakes thousands of kilometres away.

The second correction is statistical.

The USGS says Earth normally produces about 16 major earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater per year: roughly fifteen magnitude-7 events and one magnitude 8 or higher. Some years produce substantially more. In 2010 there were 23 major earthquakes. Other years produce far fewer.

A cluster of dramatic events can therefore occur naturally without proving that global seismic activity has suddenly entered a new regime.

Humans are also much better at seeing the cluster now. Twenty-four-hour news, smartphones, Telegram and X place every collapsing building on the same screen within minutes. That creates an extremely powerful impression of simultaneity.

Then there is HAARP.

The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program in Alaska studies the ionosphere—the electrically charged upper region of Earth’s atmosphere, beginning tens of kilometres above the surface and extending hundreds of kilometres upward.

HAARP uses high-frequency radio waves to temporarily excite a small region of the ionosphere.

Its transmitter power is measured in megawatts. Earthquakes release energy on an incomparably larger scale inside the solid Earth.

Colombia’s quake occurred at roughly 100 kilometres depth. HAARP interacts with tenuous charged particles far above the crust. Known physics provides no demonstrated mechanism through which those radio transmissions could inject the enormous mechanical stress needed into a fault deep below Colombia.

AP has already fact-checked HAARP claims after the Colombian earthquake, with seismologists saying the quake was caused by natural strike-slip faulting.

That has not stopped the theories.

Users have posted images of unusual lights and objects in the sky. Some describe balloons appearing before the earthquake. Others point to atmospheric anomalies or ask whether ionospheric disturbances prove an external energy source was used.

The ionosphere does interact with earthquakes—but the direction of cause is crucial.

Large earthquakes can launch acoustic and gravity waves upward, disturbing electron density in the ionosphere afterward. There are also scientific papers investigating possible ionospheric anomalies before some large earthquakes.

Those observations remain controversial as reliable precursors. The USGS says decades of research have produced no convincing evidence that electromagnetic or ionospheric signals can reliably predict earthquakes.

An anomaly before an earthquake is also not evidence that somebody caused the earthquake from the ionosphere.

That logical jump is enormous.

The conspiracy has history.

After Haiti’s catastrophic 2010 earthquake, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez was widely reported as accusing the United States of testing a “tectonic weapon” capable of producing earthquakes. The claim came without evidence, but it became permanently attached to HAARP mythology.

Every major earthquake since then brings Chávez back onto social media.

Why?

Because real military research into the atmosphere exists. HAARP originally involved the U.S. Air Force and Navy. Governments research communications, radar, satellites, electromagnetic propagation and space weather.

That military history creates fertile soil for speculation.

It is reasonable to ask what governments can do. It is not reasonable to treat the existence of classified technology as proof of a specific capability.

What about man-made earthquakes generally?

Those absolutely exist.

Mining, reservoir filling, geothermal projects, underground nuclear tests and wastewater injection can trigger seismic activity. Oklahoma’s well-known earthquake increase was strongly linked to wastewater injection.

But induced seismicity has physical signatures, locations and energy constraints. There is no evidence that the 7.7 Indonesia quake, Colombia’s 7.4 or Venezuela’s events were produced by such activity.

They occurred in regions with established tectonic hazards. Indonesia sits on one of the most active plate-boundary systems on Earth. Colombia and Venezuela lie in complex collision zones involving the Nazca, Caribbean and South American plates.

The unsettling answer is therefore less cinematic.

Earth is capable of producing multiple devastating earthquakes naturally in a short period.

That does not mean every strange sky light, balloon or radio experiment should be dismissed without investigation. It means extraordinary claims need evidence proportional to how extraordinary they are.

If someone claims HAARP created a magnitude-7 earthquake, the evidence cannot simply be “HAARP exists” plus “an earthquake happened.” There must be a demonstrated energy pathway, mechanism, timing, measurements and reproducibility.

None currently exists.

The most interesting question may therefore not be “Did HAARP do it?”

It may be why, after decades of debunking, millions of people immediately reach for HAARP whenever the Earth moves.

Maybe the deeper story of 2026 is not that somebody has learned to control earthquakes.

Maybe it is that after pandemics, wars, secret technologies, algorithmic misinformation and collapsing trust in governments, millions of people no longer believe that a disaster can simply be a disaster.
