America Has No Defense Against Hypersonic Missiles? Golden Dome Gets Its Darkest Warning
A senior U.S. space-defense official warned that America’s homeland missile defenses remain limited against advanced cruise and hypersonic threats. The statement strengthens the case for Golden Dome, but also raises a terrifying question: how exposed is the United States today?
A blunt warning from Washington has cut through the usual language of defense bureaucracy: the United States does not currently have a robust way to protect its homeland from advanced hypersonic weapons or modern cruise missiles. That message, delivered by Assistant Secretary for Space Policy Marc Berkowitz in congressional testimony and amplified through recent defense discussions, is becoming one of the strongest arguments for the planned Golden Dome missile defense system.
The statement is alarming because it challenges an assumption many Americans quietly hold: that the U.S. homeland is protected by layers of technology so advanced that incoming threats would be detected, tracked and destroyed before reaching major cities or strategic targets. The reality is more limited. Current U.S. homeland missile defense was primarily designed around a narrow mission: defending against limited ballistic missile attacks from so-called rogue states, especially North Korea.
That mission is not the same as defending against the full spectrum of twenty-first-century threats. Hypersonic glide vehicles, advanced cruise missiles, low-flying maneuverable systems, drone swarms and mixed missile salvos create a very different problem. They may fly below traditional radar coverage, maneuver unpredictably, approach from unexpected directions, or arrive in combinations that saturate defenses.
Golden Dome is being presented as the answer. The idea is to build a layered homeland defense architecture capable of detecting and defeating ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, advanced cruise missiles and other emerging threats. It would likely combine space-based sensors, ground radars, interceptors, command-and-control systems, and possibly future orbital or high-altitude components. In political language, it is sold as a shield. In technical language, it is an extremely difficult systems-integration challenge.
The timing is no coincidence. The Iran war, Russia’s missile campaign in Ukraine, China’s rapid military modernization and North Korea’s expanding arsenal have all changed the debate. Missile defense is no longer a niche issue about rare strategic attacks. It is becoming central to national security, energy security and market stability. Every conflict now teaches the same lesson: missiles and drones are cheaper to launch than they are to stop.
That cost imbalance is the nightmare. If an adversary can fire a relatively affordable cruise missile while the defender must use a multi-million-dollar interceptor, the economics favor offense. If a hypersonic weapon can bypass existing defensive geometry, the issue is not only cost but credibility. Deterrence depends on the belief that attacks will fail or trigger unbearable retaliation. Missile defense adds another layer: the ability to deny the attack’s success in the first place.
Critics of Golden Dome will raise valid concerns. First, cost. A truly layered national shield could become one of the most expensive defense projects in modern U.S. history. Second, feasibility. Hypersonic defense remains technologically difficult, and promises made in congressional hearings do not always survive engineering reality. Third, escalation. Russia and China may interpret U.S. homeland missile defense as a threat to strategic balance, encouraging them to build more offensive systems to overwhelm it.
Supporters will respond that the alternative is worse. If the U.S. admits it has little defense against certain advanced threats, then doing nothing becomes a strategic confession. The homeland was once protected by geography: two oceans, friendly neighbors and unmatched naval power. That era is fading. Missiles collapse distance. Space sensors, cyber tools and long-range weapons turn the homeland into a theater.
The Iran conflict makes the issue more immediate. Iran does not need to match the U.S. globally to create strategic shock. It can threaten regional bases, energy chokepoints, allies and shipping corridors. If future adversaries add longer-range systems, the gap between regional war and homeland risk narrows. The same logic applies to China in the Pacific and Russia in the Arctic or Atlantic approaches.
The most uncomfortable part of the warning is that it strips away mythology. America is powerful, but not invulnerable. It has extraordinary offensive reach, but defense against every incoming missile is far harder than launching one. The world’s strongest military can still have gaps, especially when technology changes faster than procurement cycles.
So is Golden Dome a necessary shield or an expensive fantasy? The honest answer may be both. It is necessary because the threat is real. It risks fantasy if politicians sell it as perfect protection. No missile defense system can guarantee a sealed sky. The goal is not absolute safety; it is better detection, more interception opportunities, greater resilience, and more uncertainty for attackers.
That distinction matters. A credible defense does not need to stop everything to change enemy calculations. It needs to stop enough, survive enough, and complicate planning enough to reduce the temptation of attack.
The warning from Washington should not be read as panic. It should be read as a doctrinal admission. The age of assuming the homeland is untouchable is over. Whether Golden Dome becomes the answer or another massive procurement promise depends on execution. But the question it raises is already unavoidable: if advanced missiles are coming faster, lower and smarter, how much time does America really have to build the shield it says it needs?
