China Turns Scientists Into National Icons: Inspiring Innovation—or Building a New State Celebrity Culture?
Images of Chinese scientist banners have sparked admiration abroad. China genuinely celebrates technical achievement, but public honor, research freedom and propaganda remain different questions.
A set of Chinese banners portraying scientists as national heroes has produced an unusual reaction online: envy. Viewers accustomed to cities covered with actors, influencers and luxury advertising ask why their own countries do not place engineers, physicians and mathematicians at the center of public culture.
The specific provenance of every circulating banner is not clear, but the broader practice is real. China regularly uses national awards, museums, school campaigns, television and public displays to celebrate scientific achievement and link innovation to national development.
In July, lithium-battery pioneer Chen Liquan and radar expert Ben De received China’s top state science honor for 2025. The same ceremony recognized 258 projects and 11 foreign experts. Chen’s work helped build knowledge behind the battery industry; Ben contributed to radar technologies with both civilian and military importance.
This public recognition serves several purposes. It gives young students identifiable technical role models, tells researchers that their work has social status and supports Beijing’s ambition to reduce dependence on foreign technology. It also reinforces a state narrative in which scientific progress validates political leadership.
The West is not devoid of scientific heroes. Nobel laureates, astronauts, medical researchers and technology founders receive enormous attention. The difference is that commercial media reward people who produce constant visual content, while laboratory work is slow, specialized and difficult to package in a thirty-second clip.
Should governments intervene in that attention economy? Scholarships named after scientists, visible public art, science festivals and accessible documentaries can broaden aspiration without ordering citizens whom to admire. Schools can teach the human stories behind discoveries rather than presenting science as a list of formulas.
China’s model also raises a warning. Celebrating approved scientists is not identical to protecting scientific freedom. Research advances when evidence can challenge official claims, negative results can be published and institutions can admit error. A banner can honor innovation while a system still limits controversial inquiry.
State priorities can accelerate difficult projects by concentrating money, talent and procurement. They can also create incentives to exaggerate success, hide safety problems or crowd out basic research without immediate economic use. National prestige is powerful fuel, but it can distort measurement.
The military dimension should not be ignored. Radar, artificial intelligence, quantum communication, aerospace and advanced materials are dual-use fields. Presenting their scientists as patriotic figures helps recruitment and normalizes a close relationship between universities, industry and national security—something that also occurs in the United States and Europe.
Celebrity culture is not automatically shallow. Entertainers create art, community and economic value. The problem is imbalance: a society that can name dozens of influencers but no living engineer behind its power grid may misunderstand what sustains everyday life.
There is also a danger in turning scientists themselves into infallible celebrities. Science works through replication, disagreement and correction. Hero worship can make it harder to question a famous researcher’s data or conflicts of interest. The healthiest admiration is directed toward methods and public service as well as individuals.
China’s impressive industrial results cannot be explained by posters alone. They reflect decades of investment in universities, manufacturing ecosystems, infrastructure, procurement and technical education. A government copying the banners without funding laboratories would be performing admiration rather than building capacity.
The viral appeal therefore reveals dissatisfaction at home more than complete knowledge of China. People want public culture to honor competence, long-term contribution and intellectual effort. That desire can be answered through democratic institutions without importing every feature of China’s political model.
There is also a class and geography question. National prizes usually honor senior figures in elite institutions, while laboratory technicians, teachers and engineers in smaller cities remain invisible. A broader culture of science would celebrate teams, failed experiments that produced learning and public-interest work that never becomes a profitable product. Otherwise the state merely replaces entertainment celebrities with an approved technical elite.
Other countries could experiment without copying propaganda: scientists on currency or stamps, municipal exhibitions chosen by independent academies, paid media fellowships and prizes for researchers who explain uncertainty honestly. The goal should be curiosity and informed respect, not obedience to experts or politicians invoking them.
What to watch next
Watch whether scientific recognition is matched by open data, research integrity, stable funding and space for dissenting findings. Other countries should ask a practical question: which scientists would they place on their streets, and what policies would ensure the celebration is more than a poster covering an underfunded laboratory?
