The sentiment is authentic.
The timing is not.
The post appears to combine remarks Musk made years apart and repackage them as a new August 2026 statement.
On May 15, 2024, Musk wrote on X: “China is awesome. Those who have not visited have no idea.”
He was responding to discussion about Chinese manufacturing and high-speed rail.
He added a comparison between Chinese and American rail infrastructure.
The encouragement to visit is even older.
In July 2021, while commenting on China’s economic development and infrastructure, Musk wrote that the country’s economic prosperity was “truly amazing” and said he encouraged people to visit and see for themselves.
These are genuine Musk comments.
They are not new.
The distinction matters because recycled quotes are one of the easiest forms of misinformation to spread.
Nothing has to be fabricated.
A real statement is stripped of its date, given a “JUST IN” label and placed into a current political context.
Readers then interpret an old comment as a fresh response to today’s events.
In Musk’s case, timing can matter enormously because his businesses have deep exposure to both the United States and China.
Tesla operates a major Shanghai factory and sells heavily in the Chinese market.
SpaceX and other Musk companies also work closely with the U.S. government.
A new pro-China statement during a period of U.S.-China strategic competition would therefore carry more political meaning than one made in 2021 or 2024.
Musk has continued to praise aspects of China in more recent years.
On Tesla’s January 2026 earnings call, he described China as extremely strong in manufacturing and increasingly capable in artificial intelligence, calling Chinese companies Tesla’s most serious competitors in humanoid robotics.
That shows his favourable assessment of Chinese industrial capability has not disappeared.
It still does not make the viral quote current.
The episode also demonstrates how quote aggregation can create a sentence a person never used exactly.

“I encourage people to visit” comes from another.
Combining the two without dates produces a statement broadly consistent with Musk’s views but historically inaccurate as a single fresh quotation.
