Wars are usually narrated through explosions people can immediately visualize: a refinery burning, a ship hit, a command bunker cratered, a tower collapsing. Radar rarely has that kind of cinematic appeal. It is abstract, technical, and easy to ignore. But the latest analysis suggests radar may be where this war is quietly becoming much more dangerous.

ABC News reported that satellite imagery and verified footage suggest at least 10 radar sites have been struck and that over 25 locations across seven bases in five countries were hit, including hangars, fuel storage and logistics buildings. Separate Wall Street Journal reporting last week described Iran as systematically targeting the radar systems that underpin U.S. and allied missile defenses across the Middle East, including high-value early-warning and THAAD-linked systems in countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and the UAE.

That changes the analytical frame. Iran is not simply trying to land missiles despite air defenses. It appears to be trying to degrade the network that makes those defenses possible. That is a different kind of campaign. It is closer to blinding than battering.

To understand why that matters, think of missile defense not as a single shield but as a process: detect, classify, track, decide, assign interceptors, confirm kill, and repeat under pressure. If the radar picture degrades, every subsequent stage becomes slower, noisier and more expensive. You may still shoot. You may still intercept. But your reaction window narrows, your confidence drops, and your margin for error disappears.

This is especially significant because the war's early public narrative leaned heavily on visible interception success. Gulf governments, Israel and U.S. officials pointed to a large number of missiles and drones being shot down as proof that the architecture was holding. The ABC and Journal reporting does not necessarily disprove that. Instead, it suggests something more worrying: the architecture may be holding while simultaneously being worn down in exactly the places that matter most for future salvos.

There are at least three interpretations of Iran's radar campaign.

The first is straightforward military logic. If you cannot reliably overwhelm all interceptor layers immediately, you target the sensors and support nodes that make repeated defense sustainable. Cheap drones, coordinated salvos and strikes on radar-related infrastructure can create cumulative effects that expensive interceptors cannot fully offset. In that reading, Iran is behaving like a rational weaker power trying to maximize cost asymmetry.

The second interpretation is political. By hitting radar sites in multiple allied countries, Iran spreads fear horizontally rather than vertically. Instead of asking whether Israel can defend itself, the region begins asking whether the entire U.S.-aligned detection network is more fragile than advertised. That can weaken deterrence even if the actual damage remains partial.

The third interpretation is informational. Once radar sites are hit, uncertainty itself becomes a weapon. Governments disclose little. Militaries avoid detail. Satellite imagery is incomplete. Analysts argue over whether a dome, shed or auxiliary system was truly mission-critical. Markets and publics are left with a blurry but corrosive impression: maybe the eyes are still open, but maybe not fully. That ambiguity can be operationally useful all by itself.

Of course, there is another side to the argument. U.S. and allied officials insist overall combat readiness remains intact. That claim should not be dismissed out of hand. Modern air-defense architectures have redundancy for exactly this reason. A damaged radar does not automatically equal a collapsed shield. Mobile systems can reposition. Other sensors can compensate. Aircraft and naval platforms can fill gaps. And militaries almost never build single-point-of-failure structures into front-line regional networks unless they are forced to. So the most dramatic social-media interpretation — that a handful of strikes have effectively "blinded" the entire region — is almost certainly too simple.

But the opposite mistake is also possible. Redundancy is not invulnerability. And even where the technical degradation is limited, the operational cost of compensating for it can be large. More sorties. More strain. More repositioning. More interceptor waste. More human fatigue. More risk that one future wave arrives at exactly the wrong time through exactly the wrong seam.

That is why the radar story connects directly to the other stories dominating the war. If Gulf refineries and ports are increasingly exposed, radar degradation matters. If cluster munitions are pressuring Israeli interceptors, radar degradation matters. If the U.S. is considering a larger operation around Hormuz, radar degradation matters. If civilian neighborhoods are being warned to evacuate because Americans might be nearby, radar degradation matters.

In other words, this is not a side story. It is the infrastructure story underneath the visible war.

There is also a strategic irony here. For years, the United States and its allies invested in high-end defensive ecosystems built to track sophisticated ballistic threats. Iran, by contrast, invested heavily in cheaper drones, distributed salvos, proxy launch corridors and repeated adaptation. The result may be a war in which expensive architecture still works, but only by absorbing far more wear from far cheaper inputs than its designers ever wanted.

What should readers watch next? Not only whether more missiles get through, but whether more radar-related sites keep showing damage, whether countries hosting these systems begin changing their political tone, and whether militaries start moving more visible backup assets into the theater. Those are signs not just of attack, but of strain.

The most dangerous wars are not always the ones where defenses fail suddenly. Sometimes they are the ones where defenses keep working just well enough to postpone panic while degrading just enough to make each new round more dangerous than the last. If at least 10 radar sites really have been hit, then the story is no longer whether Iran can occasionally penetrate the shield. It is whether it is gradually teaching the shield to fear its own exhaustion.
