Iran's Cable Threat and the Global Internet Panic: Could the Persian Gulf Really Go Dark?
Viral posts claim Iran could cut the undersea cables that carry nearly all internet traffic between Europe and Asia, freezing banks, exchanges, cloud platforms, and the digital economy. The panic framing is exaggerated, but the underlying infrastructure risk is real enough to deserve serious attention.
One of the strangest features of modern war is that the most consequential threats often arrive with the least cinematic imagery. Missiles are visible. Burning ports are visible. Undersea fiber-optic cables are not. Yet the cables may be among the most systemically important vulnerabilities exposed by the Iran war. Viral posts now claim that 95% to 99% of global internet traffic runs through cables sitting almost unprotected on the ocean floor, that Iran has threatened to cut them, and that a single break could freeze banking, crypto, cloud services, and up to $10 trillion in daily financial flows. Those numbers are dramatized, but they are not built out of nothing.
The basic premise is true: the world runs on subsea cables, not satellites. International internet, cloud, and financial traffic is overwhelmingly dependent on physical fiber laid across the seabed. The Gulf and nearby routes matter not only for the Gulf states themselves but for Europe-Asia connectivity more broadly. Analysts quoted in recent reporting have warned that accidental or deliberate damage around Gulf cable routes could have disproportionate effects, especially because repair windows become much harder when conflict keeps specialized vessels away. The example most often cited is the 2024 Red Sea cable damage incident, in which Houthi-related conflict contributed indirectly to severe disruption through anchor drag and delayed repair access.
That said, the viral version overshoots in ways that matter. It implies there is essentially no redundancy and that one cut would immediately collapse banking, exchanges, and the cloud. In reality, network operators reroute, degrade gracefully when they can, and lean on multiple paths where available. Not all countries have the same dependency profile. Not all traffic takes the same route. But “not all” is not the same as “not vulnerable.” The real danger is less a single magical kill switch than a clustering problem: if multiple cables or landing points are damaged, and if repair ships cannot safely enter the region, then an inconvenience can become a prolonged regional digital shock.
Would Iran deliberately cut its own digital neighborhood? That is a crucial question. Analysts have noted that Iran itself would not be immune from the damage. It also depends on regional and international connectivity, even if its domestic internet is heavily controlled and, at times, self-severed. That makes a deliberate mass cable-cut campaign a high-cost option. But war does not always optimize for elegance. States under existential pressure sometimes choose instruments that are painful to themselves if they believe the pain can be distributed more widely to adversaries and the global system.
There is also the issue of attribution. A missile strike on a power plant is easier to identify than a cable fault in a conflict zone. If cables fail, how quickly would the world know whether it was sabotage, collateral damage, anchor drag, military activity, or simple infrastructure stress? In that uncertainty lies strategic temptation. Ambiguity is a weapon. A state does not even need to publicly own such an act for it to shake markets and cloud platforms.
The viral posts are most useful when they point audiences back to the hidden materiality of the digital economy. Too many people still imagine the internet as abstract, floating, and naturally resilient. It is not. It is cables, landing stations, routers, cooling systems, and ships with highly specialized crews. You cannot replace meaningful intercontinental cable bandwidth with satellites in a crisis. That part of the panic posts is basically right. Space is not an automatic backup for the entire digital civilization below.

If the war continues to migrate from military assets toward the systems that keep modern life functioning, then undersea cables move from niche infrastructure to strategic prize. Even without a single confirmed cut by Iran, the threat has become plausible enough that insurers, network operators, traders, and governments have to plan around it. In other words, the most important thing about the cable story may not be whether the worst-case scenario happens. It may be that the threat is credible enough that the world now has to imagine it.
And once the world has to imagine Europe-Asia connectivity being throttled by a Gulf war, the conflict is no longer regional in any meaningful technological sense. It has already reached the architecture of global life.
