Iran’s ‘Untouched’ Natanz Bunker Exposed as Trump Rejects Nuclear Use: Hidden Bomb Site—or Misread Storage Facility?
A think tank identified a bunkered structure at Natanz that survived U.S.-Israeli attacks. It likely stored uranium hexafluoride—but the imagery does not prove active enrichment or a weapons program.
A new satellite analysis has identified an intact bunkered structure inside Iran’s Natanz nuclear complex, reopening the argument over what U.S. and Israeli strikes destroyed—and what may have survived. President Donald Trump has meanwhile dismissed using American nuclear weapons against Iran, saying conventional force already defeated its military.
The Institute for Science and International Security says the structure is separately enclosed, partly below ground and protected. Based on construction history and layout, it assesses that the building was likely intended to store uranium hexafluoride, or UF6, for large-scale enrichment operations at Natanz.
UF6 is an essential feed material for gas centrifuges. Its presence would matter because surviving cylinders could support a renewed enrichment program if Iran retained functioning centrifuges, electricity, trained staff and access. Storage capability is therefore strategically significant without being the same as an operating enrichment hall.
The institute says the building was constructed between 2010 and 2017 and does not appear to have been targeted during the military campaigns of 2025 or 2026. It also reported no visible vehicle activity there in available imagery since the June 2025 war.
That final detail cuts both ways. An intact facility could preserve latent capacity. Lack of activity could also mean the site is empty, inaccessible, dormant or less important than feared. Satellite images reveal roofs, entrances, berms and traffic; they do not identify the chemical contents of sealed cylinders underground.
Fox News framed the report as evidence of a hidden facility that may support continuing nuclear work. ‘May’ is doing important work. The institute’s own assessment is a probable storage role, not proof that uranium is currently being enriched there or that Iran is manufacturing a bomb.
Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful and rejects accusations that it seeks weapons. The United States and Israel argue that high-level enrichment, restricted inspections and secretive facilities create an unacceptable breakout risk. The IAEA’s access and material accounting are therefore more decisive than aerial photographs alone.
The strikes targeted Natanz, Fordow, Isfahan and other facilities, but assessments of damage have repeatedly differed. Military officials emphasize destroyed equipment and blocked entrances. Independent analysts warn that knowledge, dispersed components and enriched material can survive even when buildings are devastated.
Trump’s statement that he would not use nuclear weapons is important reassurance, though it does not end conventional escalation. Reuters reported him saying Iran was already defeated militarily and nuclear arms were unnecessary. He had made a broader rejection earlier in the year, arguing that such weapons should never be used.
Critics will ask how durable that assurance is if Iran attacks more U.S. facilities or rushes toward weapons-grade material. Presidential rhetoric can change during crises. Supporters will say publicly ruling out nuclear use reduces catastrophic risk while preserving overwhelming conventional options.
A nuclear strike on a nuclear facility would carry immense civilian, environmental and proliferation consequences without guaranteeing destruction of deeply buried assets. It could also normalize nuclear first use and encourage other states to acquire their own deterrents. The political cost would extend far beyond Iran.
The policy alternative is verification. Inspectors need access to the bunkered structure, declarations of any UF6 inventory and continuity-of-knowledge measures. Iran will demand sanctions relief and security assurances in exchange. Each side distrusts promises because both accuse the other of violating prior arrangements.
The report weakens any absolute claim that Iran’s nuclear infrastructure was completely ‘obliterated.’ It does not prove the opposite claim that an active secret bomb factory survived untouched. The reality may be an incomplete, dispersed program whose future depends on politics as much as concrete depth.
Material accounting is the central issue. A sealed store of declared UF6 under cameras creates a different risk from undeclared cylinders moved to an unknown site. Inspectors need serial numbers, mass balances and environmental samples. Without them, both Iranian assurances and foreign intelligence claims will remain vulnerable to political interpretation.
What to watch next
Watch whether the IAEA requests access to the structure, whether Iran declares UF6 stocks, and whether new imagery shows vehicles or ventilation activity. The key question is not simply whether one bunker survived. It is whether diplomacy can place all surviving material and facilities under credible inspection before uncertainty becomes the justification for another strike.
