A bizarre claim is circulating online: Japan’s Jewish population is tiny, yet “every prime minister is Jewish,” and Japan itself was supposedly established with Zionist support. The claim is false. It is also not harmless. It takes a real historical episode — Japan’s 1930s Fugu Plan — and turns it into an antisemitic conspiracy about hidden control.
The first factual point is simple: Japan’s prime ministers are not “all Jewish.” Modern Japanese prime ministers have overwhelmingly come from Japanese political families, bureaucratic networks, factions inside the Liberal Democratic Party and postwar institutions. There is no evidence that they are secretly Jewish. Japan’s Jewish population is indeed very small, but that fact does not support the conspiracy. It refutes the premise.
So why does the claim spread? Because it mixes a lie with a fragment of history. The Fugu Plan was a real idea discussed by some Japanese officials in the 1930s. As Japan expanded into Manchukuo and Northeast China, certain military and government figures considered settling Jewish refugees in Japanese-controlled territories. The plan was partly humanitarian, partly opportunistic and partly based on antisemitic myths. But conspiracies do not spread because they are coherent. They spread because they give simple answers to anxious audiences. In 2026, the world is filled with visible disorder: Iran war, U.S.-China rivalry, oil shocks, AI competition, migration debates and collapsing trust in institutions. In that environment, people look for hidden hands.
The real story of Japan and Jewish refugees deserves serious discussion. Japan had officials who helped Jews. It also had officials who viewed Jews through conspiratorial myths. The Fugu Plan was never the foundation of Japan. It was a wartime imperial scheme connected to refugee flows, Manchukuo strategy and distorted ideas about Jewish influence.
A small fact became a giant lie. A forgotten policy memo became proof of global control. A refugee episode became a weapon against an entire people. Japan was not secretly built by Zionism.
