Inside the Navy SEALs’ Secret Four-Month Hunt for Iranian Mines: Did America Really Reopen the Strait of Hormuz?
A Financial Times investigation says Navy SEAL divers, robotic boats and sonar submersibles spent four months clearing suspected Iranian mines from Hormuz. The operation succeeded—but the waterway can be mined again.
For four months, mostly at night, small teams of U.S. Navy SEAL divers reportedly entered the Strait of Hormuz to locate and destroy mines threatening one of the world's most important energy routes. Robotic boats and sonar-equipped underwater craft searched the seabed while surface forces guarded the teams against Iranian attack.
The operation, first detailed by the Financial Times through people familiar with the mission, was far more dangerous and labor-intensive than earlier public claims that American drones had simply identified and cleared the waterway. It also exposes the uncomfortable truth of mine warfare: planting cheap explosives can force an opponent to spend months, sophisticated equipment and enormous resources proving a channel safe.
The reported toolkit included divers in small inflatable boats, unmanned surface vessels and specialized submersibles carrying high-resolution sonar. Systems such as the MK 18 Mod 2 Kingfish can map and classify suspicious objects while keeping some personnel farther from the blast. Divers or remotely operated vehicles can then identify, mark and neutralize a mine with explosive charges.
Reports put the number at roughly 80 mines, though that figure requires caution. A sonar contact is not automatically a live mine, and a suspected mine is not automatically Iranian. A complete public inventory showing locations, types, serial markings and forensic attribution has not been released. The Pentagon has also not published a full after-action report because operational methods remain sensitive.
The mission is nevertheless credible in broad outline. Maritime authorities documented severe shipping disruption, U.S. officials repeatedly described clearance operations, and Washington later said the known mines had been removed. Specialized divers and unmanned systems are exactly the capabilities designed for this environment.
Calling the operation a SEAL mission can also obscure the wider force. Naval mine countermeasures normally involve explosive-ordnance specialists, surface ships, helicopters, intelligence teams and protection units. The Financial Times specifically reported SEAL divers, but that does not mean they worked alone or that every participant belonged to the same special-operations formation.
Why operate at night? Darkness reduces visual exposure and commercial traffic, but it does not eliminate danger. Hormuz is narrow, busy and acoustically complicated. Currents, poor visibility, fishing equipment and wreckage make classification difficult. Divers working near explosives also face the possibility of booby traps, remote activation or attack by fast boats and drones.
The strategic purpose was larger than destroying individual devices. Mines drove insurance rates higher, slowed tanker traffic and gave Tehran leverage over energy prices without requiring a full naval battle. Reopening a corridor allowed Washington to claim that freedom of navigation could be restored despite Iranian warnings.
Iran has argued that the United States is militarizing and blockading waters in which Tehran has legitimate security interests. Washington says Iran used mines and tanker attacks to coerce neutral commerce. International law distinguishes territorial seas from transit passage through an international strait, but the current conflict has turned that legal framework into a contested military reality.
Even a flawless clearance does not permanently solve the problem. Iran can deploy new mines from submarines, small craft, aircraft or disguised commercial vessels. Some devices rest on the bottom; others float or remain tethered below the surface. Modern influence mines can react to magnetic, acoustic or pressure signatures and may be programmed to ignore early ships.
History shows why navies fear this weapon. During the 1980s Tanker War, a relatively small number of mines damaged vessels and forced extensive escort and clearance operations. In 1991, Iraqi mines struck two U.S. warships and constrained amphibious planning. The strategic return came not from sinking a fleet but from introducing uncertainty into every passage. Hormuz compresses that uncertainty into a channel through which vast volumes of oil and gas normally move.
Commercial confidence also lags military declarations. A naval commander may judge a lane acceptably swept while a shipowner, crew and insurer still see unacceptable exposure. Convoys, daylight windows and route restrictions can restore some flow, yet they reduce capacity and impose delays. “Open” is therefore not a binary condition: a strait can be legally open, militarily patrolled and commercially impaired at the same time.
That gives the weaker power an asymmetric advantage. The United States may clear dozens of devices, but it must continue surveillance every day. Shipping companies cannot base decisions only on an official declaration because one new mine can close a lane psychologically before it closes it physically.
What to watch next
Watch for a Pentagon account, IMO mine totals, wreckage attribution and evidence of renewed laying. Traffic volume and insurance premiums may reveal more than victory statements. Did the four-month operation genuinely restore reliable navigation, or did it merely create a temporary swept lane that Iran can threaten again whenever negotiations or battlefield pressure turn against it?
