Nepal-born British mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja is among the climbers missing after a major avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.

The avalanche struck a group travelling between camp two and camp three at an altitude reported around 6,500 metres.

Pakistani authorities, mountaineering organisations and international media have reported differing totals as rescue information develops.

At least three bodies were confirmed recovered in the initial Reuters report. Other later accounts said four bodies had been recovered.

The identified victims included climbers from Nepal, Oman and the United States.

Several people remained missing, including Purja.

Drone footage reportedly located additional bodies or climbers, but identities and conditions were not immediately confirmed.

Poor weather, visibility and the extreme altitude have complicated helicopter and ground rescue operations.

The user-provided description that Purja is “likely dead” should not be published as a fact.

Missing climbers in a severe avalanche face an extremely dangerous situation. Survival becomes less likely as time passes, particularly with injury, exposure and limited oxygen.

Purja’s tracking device reportedly showed a rapid descent consistent with being caught in the avalanche. Later indications of movement generated some hope, although trackers can move with snow, equipment or another person and do not prove survival.

Families and rescue officials should be allowed to confirm the outcome before media publish an obituary.

Purja is one of the world’s best-known high-altitude climbers.

He served in the British military, including the Gurkhas and Special Boat Service, before becoming internationally famous for climbing all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in six months and six days in 2019.

The achievement was featured in the documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”

He later participated in the first winter ascent of K2 and built a commercial expedition business leading clients on the world’s highest mountains.

Broad Peak rises to 8,051 metres and is the world’s twelfth-highest mountain.

Its name can create a misleading impression of relative simplicity. High altitude, crevasses, unstable snow, storms and avalanche terrain make it exceptionally dangerous.

The zone between camps two and three includes exposed slopes where climbers may be attached to fixed ropes and spread along the route.

An avalanche can sweep an entire team before individuals have time to move.

Rescue above 6,000 metres is extremely difficult.

Helicopters have limited lift in thin air and may be unable to land. Ground teams face the same avalanche hazard, exhaustion and weather that trapped the original expedition.

Drones can search slopes without exposing rescuers but cannot provide medical care.

The incident will renew debate over commercial high-altitude climbing.

Purja’s supporters describe him as a transformational athlete who expanded what people believed possible and helped secure recognition for Nepali climbers.

Critics of the broader industry argue that speed records, large expeditions and social-media ambition encourage excessive risk.

No responsible conclusion about the cause of this avalanche can be drawn from Purja’s fame or commercial role alone.

Avalanches can occur even during carefully planned ascents. Weather forecasting and snow assessment reduce risk but cannot eliminate it.

Investigators and expedition organisers should later examine group size, route timing, weather, fixed-line conditions and emergency communication.

The immediate priority remains rescue and accurate identification.

Premature death reports can cause enormous harm to families and may interfere with coordination if false information spreads among teams.

The event is already one of the most consequential mountaineering disasters in recent years because of the number of climbers involved and Purja’s international profile.

It should not be reduced to celebrity tragedy.

The recovered victims had their own families, careers and achievements. The missing climbers include people from several countries whose status remains uncertain.

The open question is whether tracking data and drone sightings can guide rescuers to survivors before weather closes the remaining opportunity—or whether Broad Peak has produced a disaster whose full human cost will only become known after teams can safely reach the avalanche zone.
