Tehran has become a case study in how modern war harms civilians without a single direct hit on a home.

After strikes on oil storage facilities and refineries, residents and journalists reported oil-laden soot and "black rain." The World Health Organization warned that the black/acidic rain and the toxic compounds released by fires could pose serious respiratory risks, and it backed advice for people to stay indoors.

That is the verified core: oil facilities burned, air quality deteriorated, and public health warnings followed.

But layered on top of this is a classic wartime accelerant: viral claims that a massive explosion (some described as "mushroom-shaped") was evidence of a nuclear or "nuclear-like" weapon.

Right now, there is no credible public evidence that a nuclear weapon was used.

Why not?

Because nuclear use leaves more than dramatic visuals. A true nuclear detonation would likely generate multiple independent signatures—radiological readings, seismic detections consistent with a high-yield blast, and a pattern of casualties and infrastructure damage that is hard to hide in a megacity. None of that has been publicly confirmed by major, credible reporting as of today.

A mushroom-shaped cloud is not proof of nuclear use. Large conventional explosions, fuel-air fires, and industrial detonations can create mushroom-like plumes depending on atmospheric conditions.

So what is this episode really telling us?

First: environmental warfare is now a frontline.

Oil depots and refineries are dual-use. They supply military logistics, but they also sit inside civilian ecosystems. Burning fuel produces hydrocarbons, sulphur oxides, nitrogen compounds, and particulates—pollution that travels into lungs regardless of politics. WHO explicitly highlighted the health risk from toxic air after oil facility strikes.

Second: information chaos is an operational feature.

One side has incentives to emphasize devastation and civilian suffering to build international pressure. The other has incentives to emphasize precision and military necessity to preserve legitimacy and coalition support. Between those incentives, the internet fills the gap with speculation—some of it sincere, some weaponized.

Third: a public health crisis can change political math faster than battlefield losses.

Civilian morale is shaped by what is visible and felt. A city choking in soot doesn't need a casualty count to experience the war. It experiences it as headaches, coughing, burning eyes, panic-buying, and fear for children.

The most strategic question is not only "What was hit?" but "What can be sustained?"

Finally: the nuclear rumor itself is not random.

Nuclear fears are contagious because they compress complex war dynamics into a single terrifying storyline. They also serve different agendas: to justify escalation, to justify retaliation, or to discredit an adversary.

A healthy approach is to separate three layers:

  1. Verified: oil facilities burning; WHO warning; documented public health risk.
  2. Plausible but unconfirmed: exact strike locations, secondary explosions, scale of fuel loss.
  3. Extraordinary claims: nuclear use—requires extraordinary evidence that has not appeared.

The Iran war is being fought in airspace and sea lanes. But in Tehran this week, it's also being fought in the chemistry of the air.

And the fog isn't only smoke. It's the information environment that smoke makes easier to manipulate.
