The Commodity Nobody Is Watching Could Break Food, Batteries and Weapons Supply Chains All at Once
Phosphate is not glamorous. But when shipping through the world's most important chokepoint stops, it becomes the quiet crisis behind everything from fertiliser to lithium-iron batteries.
Oil gets the headlines. Phosphate gets the consequences.
While the world watches crude benchmarks, tanker diversions and gas prices, a less visible commodity crisis is building underneath the Hormuz disruption. Phosphate rock and processed phosphate products — critical for fertiliser, food production, battery chemistry, and even some military applications — move through supply chains that intersect directly with the Strait and with regional shipping corridors already under stress.
The numbers are stark. Morocco controls the majority of global phosphate reserves, but significant processing and trade volumes pass through or near the Gulf corridor. Iran itself is a meaningful phosphate producer. And disrupted shipping does not need to block phosphate cargoes directly to damage the market. It just needs to raise insurance costs, delay vessels, reroute logistics, and create enough uncertainty that buyers start hoarding or substituting.
That is already happening in fertiliser markets. Prices for key phosphate-based fertilisers have risen since the war began, and agricultural importers in South and Southeast Asia are reporting tighter supply and longer lead times. If this continues through the next planting season, the downstream effect is not abstract. It is food price inflation in countries that can least afford it.
The battery angle is newer but real. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are rapidly gaining market share in electric vehicles and grid storage, depend on reliable phosphate supply. A sustained disruption to phosphate logistics does not kill the EV transition overnight. But it adds cost pressure and sourcing complexity at exactly the moment manufacturers are trying to scale.
And then there is the defence dimension. Phosphorus compounds appear in munitions, smoke screens, incendiary materials and specialty chemicals. A wartime disruption to phosphate flows does not just affect farms and factories. It touches ammunition supply chains in ways that rarely make civilian headlines.
This is the pattern the Hormuz crisis keeps repeating. The first-order story is always oil. The second-order story is the web of other commodities, chemicals and materials that share the same logistics architecture. When that architecture breaks, the damage radiates outward into sectors that seem unrelated until you trace the shipping route.
So phosphate is not glamorous. But it is the quiet variable connecting food security, clean energy supply chains and military logistics. And right now, it is under the same pressure as everything else that moves through the world's most contested waterway.
