A viral story about Elon Musk’s old Chinese classmate has returned at exactly the right moment: during another U.S.-China business summit where Musk’s relationship with China is again under the microscope.
The man is Ren Yuxiang, widely known in English as Robin Ren. Online posts describe him as Musk’s University of Pennsylvania classmate, physics lab partner and perhaps one of the few people who could beat Musk in physics. Some details are difficult to verify from primary records, but the broader business story is real: Robin Ren later became a key Tesla executive and was deeply involved in the company’s China strategy.
That makes him important.
Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory was not just another factory. It was a breakthrough. It became Tesla’s first wholly foreign-owned auto plant in China and one of the most important manufacturing assets in the company’s global system. Ren’s post-Tesla career is also interesting. Reporting indicates he founded or became involved with Carbonology, a green-technology startup focused on sustainable aviation fuel using direct air carbon capture. The company has discussed developing industrial projects to convert captured CO2 into fuel, aiming at a sector where decarbonization is extremely difficult.
This fits a broader pattern. Many of the people who built the first wave of global EV infrastructure are now moving into the next climate-tech frontier: aviation fuel, batteries, carbon capture, robotics and AI-enabled manufacturing.
