For Dhaka, Rooppur is not just an energy project. It is a national status marker. Bangladesh is moving from a power-hungry developing economy dependent on imported fuels and gas shortages into the small club of countries operating nuclear energy infrastructure. That shift changes how the country thinks about energy security, industrial growth and international partnerships.
The first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has begun fuel loading and startup procedures. The plant, built with Russian assistance, uses VVER-1200 reactor technology and is expected to eventually contribute major baseload electricity to Bangladesh's grid. Full commercial operation will not happen overnight. Nuclear startup is gradual, heavily regulated and dependent on safety testing. But symbolically, the country has entered a new phase.
The timing is important. The Iran war has reminded every energy-importing country that fuel security is not an abstract policy debate. When shipping lanes close, insurance costs rise and oil prices swing violently, countries without domestic energy buffers suffer first. Bangladesh has faced energy shortages, dollar pressure and growing demand from industry and households. Nuclear power offers one answer: expensive to build, complex to manage, but capable of generating large amounts of steady electricity once operational.
Russia's role is equally important. Rosatom is not simply selling reactors. It is exporting geopolitical influence through nuclear infrastructure. A nuclear plant creates decades of technical dependency: fuel supply, maintenance, training, safety cooperation, financing, waste management and regulatory support. For Moscow, nuclear diplomacy remains one of the most effective ways to maintain influence even while facing pressure elsewhere.
Critics will ask whether Bangladesh is taking on too much risk. Nuclear projects are costly. Rooppur has been financed largely through Russian credit, raising long-term debt questions. Safety culture must be extremely strong. Bangladesh is dense, climate-vulnerable and institutionally stretched. A nuclear program requires transparency, emergency readiness and public trust. Those cannot be imported in a reactor vessel.
Supporters will respond that Bangladesh cannot industrialize on fragile energy supply. Garment exports, manufacturing, data infrastructure, urban growth and future technology sectors all require reliable electricity. Solar and wind can help, but baseload capacity remains essential. Gas is constrained. Coal faces environmental and financing limits. Nuclear offers prestige and stability.
There is also a regional dimension. South Asia's energy map is changing. India has nuclear power, major renewables and expanding grid demand. Pakistan has nuclear energy with Chinese support. Bangladesh's entry into nuclear generation adds another layer to the region's technological competition. It also gives Dhaka a stronger claim to being more than a low-cost manufacturing hub. Nuclear power is a statement of ambition.
But ambition is not enough. The real test begins after the ceremony. Can Bangladesh operate the plant safely? Can it integrate nuclear power into a grid that has faced instability? Can it manage public communication if technical delays occur? Can it avoid becoming overly dependent on one foreign supplier? Can it turn nuclear electricity into industrial productivity rather than prestige alone?
The phrase "Russia flipped the switch" makes a good headline, but the deeper story is more complex. Bangladesh invited Russia in because it needed technology, finance and a path to baseload power. Russia agreed because nuclear exports are strategic. Both sides benefit if the plant works. Both carry reputational risk if it does not.
For the wider world, Rooppur is another sign that the energy transition is not moving in one direction. Some countries are building solar farms. Some are buying LNG. Some are restarting coal. Some are going nuclear. The crisis around Iran and Hormuz has only made energy diversity more attractive.
Bangladesh did not ask permission to enter the nuclear age. Now it must prove it can stay there safely.
