Belgium Looks to Türkiye’s Drone Revolution: Why Baykar Is Becoming a NATO Wake-Up Call
Belgium’s defence minister praised Türkiye’s drone and AI defence ecosystem after visiting Baykar, saying Europe must adapt. The message is clear: NATO’s future may be built by countries that moved faster than Brussels.
Belgium’s defence minister Theo Francken has delivered a message many European capitals do not want to hear: Türkiye and Ukraine are setting the pace in modern warfare, and the rest of NATO needs to catch up.
During a visit to Türkiye, Francken praised Turkish defence innovation, including Baykar’s drone ecosystem, and said Belgium needs to modernize, adapt to artificial intelligence and learn from Türkiye. That is not a small statement from a NATO defence minister. It signals that Turkish industry is no longer treated as a secondary supplier on the margins of the alliance. It is becoming a model.
Baykar’s rise is one of the most important defence-industrial stories of the last decade. The Bayraktar TB2 became famous in Ukraine, Libya, Syria, Nagorno-Karabakh and other conflicts. But the deeper significance is not one drone. It is the speed at which Türkiye built an ecosystem: unmanned platforms, sensors, munitions, export relationships, battlefield feedback loops and political branding.
Europe, by contrast, often looks slow. It holds conferences, launches multinational frameworks, debates procurement rules and then discovers that the battlefield has already changed. Drones are cheap, disposable, software-driven and brutally effective. Traditional defence procurement was built for expensive platforms that take decades. The drone age punishes that rhythm.
Belgium’s interest matters because it reflects a broader NATO shift. For years, the alliance’s technological hierarchy was clear: the United States led, major Western European countries followed, and Türkiye was treated as strategically useful but politically difficult. Now the picture is messier. Türkiye is building drones, warships, missiles, electronic warfare systems and potentially fifth-generation aircraft. Its defence industry has become a foreign-policy tool.
That does not mean everyone trusts Ankara. Türkiye’s relations with Greece, Israel, the EU and the United States remain full of tension. Its S-400 purchase from Russia triggered major problems with Washington. Its independent posture makes many allies uncomfortable. But discomfort does not erase capability.
The most interesting part of Francken’s comments is the emphasis on AI and adaptation. Modern warfare is no longer only about who has the best tank or fighter jet. It is about who can process data faster, connect sensors to shooters, update software, absorb losses and manufacture at scale. In that environment, an agile drone company can matter more than an old defence giant.
Belgium reportedly has a major drone tender process underway, and Belgian and Turkish companies have signed defence cooperation agreements. The commercial details will matter, but the strategic symbolism already matters more. A Western European NATO country is looking to Türkiye not as a problem, but as a teacher.
This raises a bigger question for Europe. If Türkiye, Ukraine, Poland and South Korea are moving faster in defence production than the old EU core, who is really setting the military future of the continent?
France and Germany still have industrial depth. The UK has intelligence and expeditionary capabilities. Italy and Spain have important aerospace and naval industries. But speed has become power. And in drones, speed is everything.
Türkiye understood earlier than most that unmanned systems are not accessories to war. They are central to it. Belgium’s minister has now said the quiet part out loud: Europe needs to learn from that.
The future of NATO may not be written only in Washington, Paris or Berlin. It may also be written in Istanbul’s drone factories.
