For years, the car industry treated physical buttons as old-fashioned. A clean dashboard, a giant touchscreen and software-defined controls became the visual language of the future. Now regulators and safety bodies in Europe and China are asking a very practical question: can a driver operate essential controls without looking away from the road?

The answer is pushing the industry backward — or perhaps forward in a more intelligent way.

Europe’s safety-rating direction for 2026 rewards cars that keep key functions accessible through physical, intuitive controls. China is also moving toward rules that require physical controls for essential vehicle functions. The logic is simple. Some controls must be “blind-operable.” A driver should not need to hunt through menus to adjust basic functions while moving at speed.

This does not mean touchscreens are disappearing. Navigation, entertainment, vehicle settings and advanced software features will remain digital. The issue is not screen versus no screen. It is which tasks belong on a screen. Climate control, wipers, indicators, hazard lights, demisting, drive modes and safety overrides are different from choosing a podcast. When basic driving actions become buried in software layers, design minimalism can become a hazard.

The touchscreen boom was not only about aesthetics. It also served manufacturers. Screens can reduce hardware complexity, lower manufacturing variation, allow updates, create subscription opportunities and give interiors a futuristic look. A single panel can replace dozens of switches. But what looks elegant in a showroom may be annoying or dangerous on a rainy highway.

Consumer frustration has been building for years. Some drivers complain that even simple adjustments require visual attention. Haptic sliders, hidden menus and inconsistent software layouts have made cars feel more like tablets than machines. Meanwhile, automakers that once embraced screen purity are quietly restoring knobs and buttons. Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia and others have acknowledged the backlash in different ways.

There is also a philosophical issue. Technology companies often assume that more software equals more progress. But driving is not the same as scrolling. A good cockpit is not measured only by how modern it looks; it is measured by how quickly the body understands it under stress. A physical switch has memory. Your fingers learn it. You can find it without seeing it. That kind of design intelligence is easy to dismiss until it disappears.

China’s involvement is especially interesting. For years, Chinese electric vehicles pushed aggressive digital interiors, sometimes faster than European or American rivals. If China now requires or encourages physical controls for certain functions, it signals that the world’s most competitive EV market is also learning the limits of screen-first design. Safety, usability and regulation are beginning to catch up with the showroom race.

The counterargument deserves attention. Software-defined vehicles are not inherently unsafe. Voice control, steering-wheel shortcuts, head-up displays and AI assistants could reduce distraction if implemented well. Younger drivers may adapt faster to digital interfaces. Physical controls can also create clutter, cost and design constraints. The goal should not be nostalgia for old dashboards. The goal should be task-appropriate design.

Still, the regulatory direction is clear: the industry must prove that digital interfaces do not increase risk. If a car needs five taps to activate a function that used to require one button, the burden of proof belongs to the automaker.

This story is bigger than cars. It is a warning about technology culture. Over the last decade, many products removed tactile controls in the name of elegance. We got flat interfaces, hidden gestures, subscription features and sleek surfaces. Sometimes that made life easier. Sometimes it made basic actions slower. The button is returning because the human body never stopped needing feedback.

For consumers, the question is practical: when you test a new car, do not just admire the screen. Try changing the temperature, clearing the windshield, turning on hazards and adjusting mirrors without staring. If the car makes you feel like you are operating a website while driving, the design has failed.

The open question for automakers is whether they can combine the best of both worlds: software intelligence with physical clarity. The future may not be screenless. But it may finally admit that not every problem is solved by another menu.
