That brings us to a bigger issue: what kind of hit would matter most? Many people instinctively imagine a spectacular surface-to-air missile lock, a launch, and a single dramatic strike proving that anti-stealth radars and integrated defenses have solved the puzzle. Real wars are often messier. A jet can be detected intermittently, forced into narrower corridors, exposed to lower-tier air defenses after operating under strain, or damaged by systems that are unimpressive on paper but dangerous in layered environments. The lesson would not necessarily be that Iran possesses a silver bullet. It might instead be that enough persistence, adaptation and distributed defenses can create windows of vulnerability even for top-tier platforms.
That is why the article matters even if the most dramatic claims remain unproven. The F-35 has been sold politically as a symbol of Western technological overmatch. Every sign that it can be touched, even at the margin, changes how adversaries think about cost exchange and how allies think about protection. A jet worth roughly $100 million that returns damaged from a mission may still be a tactical success if the mission objectives were achieved. But strategically it invites the question: how many such incidents can a public absorb before the psychological premium attached to stealth starts eroding?

High-tempo wars wear down systems, crews and planning margins. In that environment, incidents that might once have remained mere technical footnotes acquire broader significance. Because complacent claims about neutralized air defenses were premature? Because even degraded adversaries remain dangerous? We do not yet know. But each answer points to a different kind of war.

The reputational dimension of any first combat damage is therefore multinational. An emergency landing in one war zone echoes in procurement conversations elsewhere.
