Europe Escaped Russian Gas — and Walked Straight Into America's LNG Trap
Europe spent years cutting Russian gas dependence, only to discover that the Iran war has left it exposed again — this time through LNG, low storage and a growing reliance on U.S. molecules.
Europe spent four years trying to get out from under Russia's energy shadow.
It built terminals. It signed LNG contracts. It congratulated itself for diversification.
Then the Iran war exposed the uncomfortable truth: Europe did not eliminate dependency. It repackaged it.
Reuters reports that European gas prices have jumped more than 60% since the war began, while the European Commission has urged countries to start refilling storage early because reserves are unusually low. Storage levels around 28% are far below the comfort zone Europe wanted for this point in the year. That matters because the continent is entering another refill season from a weaker base than it had in recent years.
And what fills that gap now? Increasingly, U.S. LNG.
Reuters has reported that the United States became the EU's main LNG supplier in 2025, and that U.S. LNG accounted for 60% of EU LNG imports in January 2026. That is not energy sovereignty. It is a new hierarchy.
The Qatar shock makes the trap clearer. Middle East LNG damage and Hormuz disruption have removed one of Europe's fallback options just as prices spike. So the continent is left leaning more heavily on American cargoes at exactly the moment Washington is also the military actor at the center of the war.
Germany shows the political cost. Reuters reports Deutsche Bank cut its 2026 German growth forecast from 1.5% to 1.0%, while other institutes warn that prolonged energy stress could push Europe's biggest economy back toward deindustrialization fears.
That is the structural trap.
Europe escaped Russian pipelines. But it did not become free. It became more exposed to LNG, more exposed to shipping, more exposed to price volatility — and more exposed to a supplier relationship dominated by the United States. The landlord changed. The vulnerability did not.
