Windward, a maritime analytics firm, reported that more than 1,100 vessels experienced GPS and AIS interference across Gulf waters within a 24-hour period amid heightened tensions, describing ships appearing in impossible locations and identifying multiple new “jamming clusters.” (Windward) Wired also reported a spike in satellite navigation attacks affecting roughly the same scale of vessels since the start of the current U.S.-Israel strikes against Iran. This matters because GPS disruption is not a niche technical story. It is a trade story, an energy story, and a safety story.

Commercial shipping is built on predictability: routes, arrival windows, port schedules, insurance assumptions, and compliance reporting. AIS (Automatic Identification System) broadcasts a vessel's identity and location. GPS provides the position. When either is spoofed or jammed, the modern maritime ecosystem starts to behave like it did a century ago—except now the ships are bigger, the sea lanes are tighter, and the consequences are amplified by global supply chains.

There are three immediate risk layers.

First is collision risk. In congested Gulf waters—near major ports, chokepoints, and anchorages—position errors can lead to near-misses and accidents, especially at night or during high-traffic periods. Ships do have fallback navigation methods, but commercial operations depend heavily on digital reliability.

Second is insurance and liability. Marine insurers price risk based on route, threat level, and incident frequency. If GPS jamming becomes persistent, insurers may raise premiums, impose routing constraints, or demand additional security procedures. Even without a single ship being hit by a weapon, the economic effect can be significant: higher costs, slower transit, and reduced willingness to enter certain zones.

Third is security ambiguity. Jamming and spoofing create fog. In fog, attribution becomes harder—was a ship behaving suspiciously, or did its signal lie? That ambiguity can be exploited by smugglers, sanctions evaders, and armed actors. It also increases the chance of misinterpretation by naval forces, which is one of the classic pathways to accidental escalation.

The timing is not accidental. Maritime disruption is an asymmetric tool. If a state cannot control airspace, it can still impose costs on global trade by destabilizing navigational confidence. And in the Gulf, navigational confidence is a strategic asset: it is what turns geography into revenue.

Importantly, not every interference event is necessarily a coordinated state campaign. Some jamming can be localized, defensive, or even incidental. But at the scale being reported—multiple clusters and over a thousand affected vessels—this looks like systemic stress, not random noise. (Windward)

For markets, the consequence is a new kind of premium: not only “war risk” but “data risk.” Traders and logistics planners price disruptions when ships are attacked; now they must price disruption when ships cannot reliably tell the world where they are.

For policymakers, the issue is more severe: navigation integrity is an underappreciated pillar of economic stability. If the war expands into persistent electronic warfare against civilian infrastructure systems, the conflict ceases to be regional in its effects—even if the missiles remain regional in their flight paths.

The sea, in short, is being turned into a misinformation environment. And once the sea becomes an information battlefield, every container and tanker becomes a political instrument, whether it wants to or not. (Windward)
