Another claim riding the war’s information wave: oil isn’t “fossil” at all, it’s a renewable fluid produced inside the Earth — scarcity is a lie used to keep prices high.
There is a kernel of scientific reality here — and a mountain of misinformation built on top of it.
What science actually says about “abiotic oil”
Geologists do recognize that some hydrocarbons can form through inorganic (abiotic) processes under certain conditions. Deep Earth chemistry can produce methane and other hydrocarbons; some are found in mantle-derived rocks and hydrothermal systems. This is not controversial: hydrocarbons exist on bodies like Titan, and Earth can generate small amounts abiotically.
But the key words are “some” and “small.” The overwhelming scientific consensus is that the commercially significant petroleum deposits humans extract today are predominantly biogenic: they originate from ancient organic matter transformed over geologic time by heat and pressure, then trapped in reservoirs. Even proponents of abiogenic hypotheses typically do not claim that globally significant amounts of abiotic hydrocarbons are likely — and mainstream petroleum geology does not treat abiotic formation as the primary source of the world’s oil fields.
Where the “renewable oil” narrative goes off the rails
- Timescale. Even if some hydrocarbons are generated in the crust or mantle, the rate is not “renewable” on human timescales. “Renewable” implies replenishment within years to decades. Oil system formation operates over millions of years.
- Recoverable volume. “There is as much oil as water” is not supported by credible geologic accounting. What matters is not theoretical carbon in the mantle; it is recoverable reserves in accessible reservoirs with the right geology, porosity, pressure, and economics.
- Engineering reality. Oil fields decline. Drilling and enhanced recovery can slow decline, but they do not magically refill reservoirs. If oil were replenishing fields at meaningful rates, the industry would notice it first. Instead, field decline curves are among the most studied datasets in modern industrial history.
Why this myth spreads during energy shocks
Because it offers emotional relief: if oil is “infinite,” then price spikes feel like manipulation rather than physics. In wartime, where prices rise and governments talk about rationing, audiences become more receptive to any claim that transforms pain into betrayal.
It also fits a political narrative: “scarcity is fake, elites are lying.” That narrative can be deployed by actors across the spectrum, and it becomes especially sticky when daily life is affected by fuel prices.
But even if oil were infinite, war would still matter
This is the part the conspiracy story conveniently ignores.
The current disruption is not just about how much oil exists. It’s about whether it can move: chokepoints, insurance, shipping routes, sanctions, refinery configurations, and political risk. A planet with infinite oil can still have a $120 barrel if tankers won’t sail and refineries can’t get the grade they need.
And there is the climate dimension. Even if hydrocarbons were replenishing, burning them still adds CO₂ to the atmosphere. “Infinite supply” does not mean “zero external cost.”
The better questions to ask
- How quickly can alternative supply routes and production replace a closed chokepoint?
- How do insurance and war-risk premiums become de facto embargoes?
- What does an energy system look like when geopolitical risk becomes permanent?
Abiotic hydrocarbon chemistry is real — as a minor phenomenon. “Oil is unlimited and renewable” is not a scientific conclusion. It’s a wartime comfort story, marketed as geology.
