Six Rifles on a Metal Frame: Vietnam’s ‘New Anti-Drone Weapon’ or an Old Lesson From Ukraine?
A viral clip claims Vietnam has unveiled an anti-drone weapon made from six AK-style rifles. The concept looks crude, but the deeper story is how cheap drones are forcing armies to improvise.
The viral image is almost comic: six AK-style rifles fixed to a metal frame, pointed skyward, apparently designed to fire together at drones. The caption says Vietnam has presented a new anti-drone weapon. Others note that a country that defeated both the United States and China can fight however it wants.
The first caution is that the claim may be misattributed. Similar footage of multiple rifles strapped together has circulated for years in connection with improvised Ukrainian anti-drone experiments, including AK-74-type rifles rather than Vietnamese AK-47s. Online military clips often get recycled with new national labels because the visual is stronger than the sourcing. Before calling it a Vietnamese system, readers should ask: where was the footage filmed, who released it, and is there an official Vietnamese defense source?
Even if the national label is wrong, the idea is worth analyzing. The ugly truth of modern war is that cheap drones have created an expensive problem. A quadcopter costing hundreds or thousands of dollars can spot artillery, drop grenades, harass trenches, damage vehicles, and force troops to hide. Shooting it down with a missile can cost far more than the drone itself. That imbalance has pushed armies toward cheaper tools: shotguns, jammers, nets, lasers, electronic warfare, small-caliber cannons, and improvised rifle arrays.
A frame of six rifles is not elegant. It is not a polished defense-industry product. It may not even work well. But it expresses a real tactical need: increase the volume of fire against a small moving target without spending missile money. In theory, multiple rifles fired together create a wider pattern of bullets. In practice, accuracy, recoil, synchronization, ammunition waste, visibility, operator safety, and target tracking all become serious problems.
The design also shows why drone warfare is so disruptive. Traditional air defense was built to stop aircraft, missiles, and helicopters. Small drones live in the gap between infantry weapons and expensive air-defense systems. They are too small for old assumptions and too numerous for luxury solutions.
