The UAE Is Putting Giant ‘Cope Cages’ Around Fuel Tanks: Ukraine’s Cheapest Anti-Drone Trick Comes to the Gulf
New images appear to show large anti-drone cage structures around fuel tanks in Abu Dhabi after similar defenses were documented earlier in Dubai. The concept is real; claims that every site is now fully protected remain based mainly on imagery rather than an official UAE announcement.
One of the strangest battlefield adaptations from Ukraine is spreading into the Gulf: giant metal cages and net structures around fuel tanks.
New imagery circulating on August 22 appears to show completed or nearly completed anti-drone structures around fuel-storage infrastructure in Abu Dhabi. Similar cages were already documented earlier in the year around UAE oil infrastructure near Dubai.
The exact location and full scope of the newest Abu Dhabi installations have not been confirmed by an official UAE statement, so claims that every pictured tank has now received permanent protection should remain cautious.
The underlying defensive concept is absolutely real.
The War Zone documented UAE ‘cope cages’ earlier this year after months of Iranian missile and drone attacks. The UAE has acknowledged repeated attacks on fuel, gas and energy infrastructure, including a drone strike on a Mussafah fuel terminal and a separate strike outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant.
Why would one of the world’s richest states use what looks like welded scaffolding when it owns Patriot, THAAD and sophisticated radars?
Because modern air defence has an economics problem.
A one-way attack drone can cost a tiny fraction of a premium interceptor. When thousands of drones are launched over months, shooting every one down with expensive missiles becomes financially and logistically difficult. Even very good air defence also leaks occasionally.
The cage is a last layer.
If a drone hits the metal grid before the fuel tank, its warhead may detonate at a distance from the tank wall. That stand-off can reduce blast, fragmentation and penetration. Nets can also catch smaller drones or disrupt the exact impact angle.
It is not a force field. Ballistic missiles will tear through this type of structure. Heavy cruise missiles may do the same. Attackers can use larger warheads, different angles or repeated drones to open a path.
The structure can also make maintenance and firefighting harder.
That means the cages work only as part of layered defence: radar, electronic warfare, missiles, guns, dispersal, blast walls, redundancy and passive hardening.
The wider lesson comes directly from Ukraine. Both Russia and Ukraine began with sophisticated weapons and eventually rediscovered old methods: camouflage, nets, trenches, decoys and physical barriers. Cheap drones made simple protection economically rational again.
The UAE now faces the same attrition problem.
Iran can launch inexpensive drones toward extremely expensive energy infrastructure. Even a low percentage penetrating air defences can create fires worth hundreds of millions of dollars. If a relatively cheap metal cage reduces the damage from one successful impact, the investment pays for itself immediately.
The imagery also has propaganda value. Iranian accounts can present the cages as proof that Western-made air defence failed and that Gulf infrastructure now literally has to be put behind bars. The UAE can present them as evidence of rapid adaptation and resilience.
Both narratives miss the practical point: no air defence is perfect.
The best systems combine active interception with passive survival measures for the weapons that get through.
The real test will come during future attacks. Engineers will want to know whether the cages detonate Shahed-class warheads early enough, whether tank fires remain contained and whether the structures survive repeated strikes.
If they work, expect more Gulf infrastructure to look increasingly like wartime Ukraine: expensive radars in the distance, cheap steel overhead and critical equipment surrounded by layers designed on the assumption that eventually something will penetrate the sky.
