America Has Lost Dozens of MQ-9 Reapers in the Iran War—but ‘25% of the Fleet’ Needs Careful Math
The U.S. Air Force has lost at least 24 MQ-9 Reapers in Operation Epic Fury and its fleet has fallen to roughly 135 aircraft, according to Air Force testimony and defence reporting. That is a major readiness problem, but the viral claim that exactly 25% of the fleet was lost in the Iran war depends on which baseline and losses are counted.

The United States has lost an extraordinary number of MQ-9 Reaper drones during the war with Iran.
The broad claim is true.
The exact statement that America lost “about 25% of its Reaper drones” requires more careful arithmetic than the viral headline suggests.
Air Force testimony and specialist defence reporting provide several useful benchmarks.
The active-duty Air Force ended fiscal 2025 with roughly 158 MQ-9s, while the Air National Guard operated additional aircraft.
By May 2026, senior Air Force officials told Congress the fleet had fallen to around 135.
Defense News reported 24 MQ-9 losses during Operation Epic Fury.
Other reporting later described nearly 30 Reapers destroyed in Iran-related combat and dozens lost when earlier Houthi shootdowns and other incidents are included.
Those figures describe an enormous attrition problem.
They do not all use the same denominator.
If 24 Iran-war losses are compared with a pre-war force of roughly 182 active and Guard aircraft, the result is closer to 13% than 25%.
If analysts use only a smaller deployable subset, count additional losses later in the war or compare today’s inventory with a longstanding planning floor, the percentage becomes much larger.
That may explain where the 25% figure originates.
It should not be quoted without defining the baseline.
The operational significance is clearer than the percentage.
The MQ-9 became one of the most heavily used American aircraft in the Iran conflict.
Reapers conducted surveillance, identified missile launchers and struck targets deep inside contested airspace.
Air Force leadership reportedly described the platform as the “MVP” of the campaign.
Its strengths are endurance and persistence.
A Reaper can remain airborne for many hours without risking a pilot.
It carries sophisticated sensors and precision weapons.
Those advantages made it ideal for hunting mobile Iranian missile systems.
Its weakness is survivability.
The MQ-9 was designed largely for the permissive airspace of post-9/11 counterterrorism campaigns.
It is slow, not stealthy and vulnerable to modern surface-to-air missiles and fighter aircraft.
Iran demonstrated that expensive unmanned aircraft can be destroyed repeatedly by an adversary with competent air defence.
That changes the economics.
A fully equipped Reaper can cost tens of millions of dollars.
Losing dozens creates a bill approaching or exceeding a billion dollars.
More importantly, replacements are not immediately available.
The MQ-9A production line was already winding down because the Air Force expected to move toward newer systems.
The war suddenly made the existing fleet indispensable at exactly the moment the service was planning its retirement.
The Air Force is now exploring cheaper, more attritable unmanned aircraft that can provide some Reaper-like range and payload without making every loss so expensive.
That is a lesson with direct relevance to China.
A Pacific war would involve far stronger integrated air defences than Iran.
If MQ-9s suffer severe attrition over Iran, sending them near China in large numbers would be even riskier.
The U.S. therefore needs either stealthier unmanned systems or aircraft cheap enough to lose deliberately.
The term “attritable” captures that shift.
Drones reduce the human cost of losing an aircraft.
They do not eliminate the financial and strategic cost.
Every destroyed Reaper is one less surveillance orbit available in the Pacific, Africa or another theatre.
The Washington Post has warned more broadly that Iran-war demands are eroding U.S. readiness for China, including intelligence and surveillance capacity.
That strategic conclusion is strongly supported even if the exact 25% headline is not.
The open question is whether the Iran war proves the Reaper concept was a transitional success whose era is ending—or whether the Air Force can replace lost aircraft and adapt the platform quickly enough to keep an extraordinarily useful drone relevant in airspace far more dangerous than the wars it was originally built to fight.
