The Iran war has exposed a strategic vulnerability that sounds almost too basic for the world’s largest military: the United States has very limited domestic capacity to make some of the high-purity aluminum needed for advanced defence applications.

The problem is not that America is running out of aluminum generally.

The United States produces and imports large quantities of ordinary aluminum.

The vulnerability concerns specialised high-purity primary metal used to make certain aerospace alloys, armour and other high-performance products.

Bloomberg reporting has highlighted Pentagon concern that the supply chain could become a bottleneck during a larger war.

The underlying industrial history is well documented.

Century Aluminum’s Hawesville, Kentucky smelter once represented one of America’s key sources capable of supporting high-purity production.

The facility was idled in 2022 amid extremely high electricity costs.

Domestic production never fully recovered.

That left the United States increasingly dependent on imported high-purity material.

Industry data indicates that the UAE supplied the overwhelming majority of U.S. imports in one important high-purity ingot category in 2025, largely through Emirates Global Aluminium.

That dependence looked manageable when the Persian Gulf was stable.

The 2026 Iran war changed the calculation.

Middle Eastern aluminum facilities have been damaged or disrupted, and the Strait of Hormuz crisis has complicated shipping.

Aluminum prices rose sharply as markets priced in reduced Gulf supply.

A supply chain that looked commercially efficient became a national-security vulnerability almost overnight.

Military demand itself is relatively small compared with the enormous civilian aluminum market.

That creates a paradox.

Defence needs may be strategically critical but too small on their own to justify operating a large specialised smelter economically.

Commercial aerospace, electrical and industrial buyers normally help support the production base.

If those markets disappear or electricity becomes too expensive, military customers cannot simply keep the entire industry alive through occasional orders.

The U.S. government is trying to rebuild capacity.

The Department of Energy says a planned Century Aluminum and Emirates Global Aluminium project in Oklahoma could eventually produce more than 500,000 tonnes of primary aluminum annually, including around 20,000 tonnes of high-purity material suitable for national-defence applications.

The project is significant.

It is not available today.

New smelters require enormous electricity supplies, financing, environmental approvals, construction and specialised equipment.

That means the vulnerability persists during the exact period when the Pentagon is also trying to replenish missiles, aircraft and other equipment used in Iran.

The claim that one remaining U.S. facility can produce material of sufficient quality for some military uses does not eliminate the risk.

A supply chain with one or a few qualified domestic sources has little redundancy.

One outage, fire or power problem can become strategic.

This is the broader lesson of the Iran war.

Military power depends on industrial materials that rarely appear in debates about aircraft carriers or stealth fighters.

Aluminum, rocket motors, propellants, electronics and machine tools can become the real limiting factors.

The open question is whether Washington will pay the sustained industrial cost required to rebuild strategic redundancy—or once again allow specialised domestic capacity to disappear after the immediate crisis passes.
