Electronic warfare is shaping this conflict beyond missiles and drones. GPS interference raises collision risk, complicates shipping insurance, and turns navigation into a vulnerability.
The most consequential attacks in modern conflict are not always explosive. Sometimes they are invisible—felt as uncertainty, mislocation, and operational hesitation. In the current Iran war, GPS interference has emerged as a critical, underappreciated danger, especially for maritime and aviation activity near strategic chokepoints.
Specialist reporting has documented widespread GPS jamming in and around the Strait of Hormuz, including disruptions affecting commercial vessels. This matters because modern shipping depends on satellite positioning not only for navigation, but for timing, port coordination, collision avoidance, and compliance reporting. When GPS fails or becomes unreliable, the ocean becomes "thicker": ships slow down, spacing increases, and the probability of accidents rises—particularly in narrow waters and congested lanes.
Jamming is attractive for several reasons:
It is deniable. Unlike a missile launch, electronic interference can be hard to attribute definitively in real time. It is scalable. Technologically, this war sits at the intersection of multiple great-power toolkits. The U.S., China, and Russia have all developed advanced electronic warfare capabilities over decades, and regional actors have studied and adapted those methods. The trendline is clear: electronic warfare is no longer a specialized battlefield niche; it is a strategic layer that shapes commercial life.
For ship operators, the immediate mitigation is procedural: revert to inertial navigation methods, radar plotting, visual fixes, and strict bridge protocols. For insurers, the mitigation is financial: treat contested waters as high risk, raise premiums, or deny coverage. For governments, the mitigation becomes political: escort missions, public warnings, and diplomatic pressure.
The economic consequence is the most important. Shipping risk premiums are a hidden tax. When insurers price in electronic uncertainty, it can move global commodity costs, particularly when combined with physical disruption and facility shutdowns. That is how electronic warfare becomes an inflationary event.
There is also a human consequence. Stranded crews, delayed cargoes, disrupted flight schedules, and emergency evacuations become more likely when navigation becomes unreliable. What begins as a military tactic becomes a humanitarian and economic stressor.
The strategic lesson is that "war tech" is now dual-use by design. GPS, AIS tracking, satellite communications, and digital logistics are not merely enablers; they are vulnerabilities. And in a region where a narrow strait already concentrates global energy flows, electronic warfare can produce effects disproportionate to its visibility.
If the conflict continues, expect GPS disruption to persist—not necessarily because it wins wars by itself, but because it makes everything else harder: harder to move, harder to insure, harder to coordinate, and harder to de-escalate.
